MORD AUF SCHLOSS HAVERSHAM / THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG
A Comedy By Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields
It is the opening night of »The Murder on Haversham Manor«, a classic whodunnit story taking place in an old English manor. Castle owner Charles Haversham was murdered. Who did it? His fiancée, his brother, his friend, his butler or even his gardener? Inspector Carter starts investigating.
The amateur actor group is looking forward to finally show the world what they have been working on! They have put their hearts and souls into the creation of the scenery. While the first audience members are ushered to their seats, the last props are arranged carefully. It is a crime story after all and everything has to be perfect! Nothing is more important than perfect timing and precise acting.
But their nerves are raw. As soon as the curtain opens, mishaps occur one after another. They are right in every actor’s worst nightmare. Doors will not move, props are nowhere to be found, lines are forgot or get mixed up, parts of the stage set are one step from collapsing, and the dog is missing.
When the lead actress is accidentally hit on the head and faints, the perfect chaos is complete. But no matter what happens, the show must go on! The actors‘ unwavering passion for theatre lets them rise above their challenges. With the courage of desperation they try to tame the chaos: by keeping their composure and trying not to let anyone suspect something is wrong. So, it is not just the plot of the whodunnit going absolutely crazy on this stage!
This comedy offers the best of absurd British humour: Monty Python, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin send their regards. It is also a giant declaration of love to theatre itself. The three authors and actors, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Slayer and Henry Shields, met as students at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. During their studies in 2008 they founded their theatre group »Mischief Theatre« and performed their unique mix of impro theatre and comedy on stage.
»The Play That Goes Wrong« came about in the flat they all shared, one upping another’s wit and bizarre ideas, ending in a big success. The comedy has been played in London’s West End nonstop since 2012 and was awarded with the price for Best Comedy in 2014. It has since reached Broadway and lots of other stages worldwide.
