»LAZARUS« - A Musical by David Bowie And Enda Walsh

LAZARUS
A musical by David Bowie & Enda Walsh
Inspired by the novel »The Man Who Fell To Earth« by Walter Tevis

»Look up here, I’m in heaven, I’ve got scars that can’t be seen…«
These are the first lines of David Bowie’s »Lazarus«, the opening song of the musical by the same name. Striking lines. Prophetic lines.
No one could have known that the premiere of the musical on 7th December 2015 in New York would be Bowie’s last public appearance. At this time he kept his severe illness a secret. Bowie, an exceptional artist, was happy on that evening, seeing the musical he had written with the Irish playwright Enda Walsh come to life. It had been a long-held dream of his. Ever since David Bowie played the leading role in the film »The Man Who Fell To Earth« in 1976 he had been fascinated by the material.

The alien Thomas Jerome Newton comes to Earth to procure water for his dried up home planet and establishes a multi-billion dollar high tech company to be able to build a rocketship for his return. But he falls into the traps of the business and consumerism world, falls in love with Earth girl Mary Lou and loses sight of his original goals completely. Newton ends up as a cynical, disillusioned Earth citizen, one among many.
That is the point Bowie and Walsh use to start the story of »Lazarus« and continue it: Newton lives among us, spends his days watching TV and drinking gin. He feels tortured by the demons of his past, tries to drown them in alcohol, and grieves the loss of his lover Mary Lou. His immortality pains him, makes him yearn for salvation.
When a young girl, a lost soul just like him, enters his life, he starts feeling hopeful again. Could she help him to embark on the journey home he has been aching for for so long?

»Lazarus« features some of Bowie’s worldwide hits such as »Absolute Beginners«, »Heroes«, »This Is Not America« and »Life On Mars?«. It also includes four new songs, composed solely for the musical, like the opening song »Lazarus«. 17 great Bowie songs make up the soundtrack in total.
On 10th January 2016, roughly a month after the premiere, Bowie died. In retrospect, this story about a man cursed with eternal life, only wishing for death, is seen as his legacy. It is a piece flickering between dream and reality, philosophising about the reason of human existence. And also about death as a part of life.
The biblical Lazarus is a symbol of resurrection. David Bowie, however, has become immortal through his music already.
